More comic strip trivia . . .

Today is the birthday of Alfred Gerald Caplin (September 28, 1909 – November 5, 1979), better known as Al Capp, cartoonist and humorist best known for the comic strip Li'l Abner. He also wrote the comic strips Abbie an' Slats and Long Sam.

Al Capp won the National Cartoonists Society's Reuben Award in 1947 for Cartoonist of the Year, and their 1979 Elzie Segar Award (posthumously) for his unique and outstanding contribution to the profession of cartooning.

Al Capp was born in New Haven, Connecticut, USA and he attended Bridgeport High School. He lost his right leg in a trolley accident at the age of nine, this tragedy, some believe may have attributed to his slightly cynical worldview that appeared in his artform.
